At First Christian Church, Winder, we believe that ALL people are children of God and are loved unconditionally.  We are called to break down the walls between us to love, affirm and welcome everyone.  We open up ourselves and our doors to embrace any who seek God’s life-giving grace.

As a part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we are a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world.  We recognize that God’s children differ in race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, nationality, ethnicity, marital status, physical or mental ability, political affiliation and theological perspective, and yet are all a part of the one body of Christ.  Therefore we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.

Worship

Welcome to First Christian Church, Winder!

Our worship begins in the sanctuary with announcements at 10:55am on Sunday mornings and usually ends by 12:15.

We are an Open & Affirming congregation, and that means that we hope to welcome all people, whether they are gay or straight, married or single, young or more seasoned, a Christian since birth or a person seeking to know God or Christ.

We are a theologically progressive congregation but our style of worship is traditional. There’s a pipe organ and a choir, and the minister and the choir wear robes. We typically sing traditional hymns. Our organ drives our worship and we use hymnals; they’re red and in the rack in front of you. The smaller red book is the pew bible.

In our church and our denomination, we share communion every Sunday morning. Our table is open. That means that all people are welcome to take communion.  If you prefer not to, that is fine as well.

Most Sundays, we pass communion.  That means that a Deacon will bring the tray of bread to your row and pass it down.  The bread is followed by a tray of cups with grape juice in them.  When the trays come by, just take the bread and juice as they are passed.  You may put your cup back onto the same tray you took it from when you are finished. Some Sundays we take communion by intinction.  That means that everyone will come forward in a line to a station, break off a piece of bread from a loaf of bread, and then dip that piece of bread into the cup of grape juice.

At the very end of the service we all join hands and sing, “Blest be the Tie That Binds.” The words are printed in the bulletin, but it is fine if you don't sing them. Just take someone’s hand.

People are dressed in a variety of ways at First Christian. You’ll see some ties and some dresses. You’ll also see people in shorts in the summer and jeans when it’s cold. Come in what makes you comfortable.

Ask anyone who greets you when you come in the door about childcare during worship. You’re also welcome to have your children stay with you for the entirety of the service.
